Technology

Technology is an increasingly integral part of what we do here at Putney. From Moodle courses, to Google Apps for Education, to robotics and science lab data collection - technology provides opportunities for project based, hands-on learning and collaboration.

Students should plan on bringing a computer with them to campus and using technology in all of their classes. The Putney IT staff supports Windows, MacIntosh and Linux environments. All buildings as well as some outside areas have wireless access.

The Instructional Technology Center (ITC) is located next to the library. The ITC serves as a central site for teachers and students to learn new technologies and to improve their skills on the programs they already use as well as get help from the IT staff. The center provides the equipment and facilities so that students can create with and incorporate technology into an assignment. Beyond the ITC there are a wide variety of technologies available from video production equipment, digital video cameras, digital still cameras, MIDI controllers and music composition applications, ProTools based digital recording equipment, scanners, and color and black and white printers. The computers in the ITC have a variety of software titles suited for video production, web page design, graphics, digital photography, video conferencing, document scanning and desktop publishing.

Technical Requirements For Putney

Students should plan on bringing a computer (preferably a laptop) with them to campus. In addition we have an Instructional Technology Center which houses several high end computers, a MIDI lab, Video Lab and every dorm common room has at least one computer. Students also have access to both color and black and white printers and photocopiers.

We have a campus -wide wireless network and are platform independent and support Mac, Windows, and Linux computers.

If you are planning on purchasing a computer for school, first and foremost choose a computer that you are comfortable with. Be sure to purchase a three year warranty if possible (computers do break, and having the extra protection is important). We would recommend purchasing a machine with at least 2GB of RAM, a 120GB hard drive, and a 2Ghz processor. If you would like help purchasing a computer please do not hesitate to contact me.
