English Teacher

The Putney School, a progressive secondary boarding school, has an opening for a full-time English teacher for the 2012-2013 school year. Applicants should have experience in teaching at the secondary or college level. Responsibilities will include teaching English two or three class sections per trimester, with emphasis on teaching writing process, multicultural literature, and cross-disciplinary humanities including American and Media Studies; regular conferences with students; all preparation and evaluation, etc.  Additional responsibilities include involvement in the work program, athletics, evening arts program, or other areas of expertise and interest; residential duties including dormitory supervision or support; and advising responsibilities for six to eight students.

Qualifications: Undergraduate degree in English, or Comp Lit; M.A. or M.F.A. preferred; minimum two years’ teaching experience, preferably at the secondary level; interest and demonstrated ability in teaching and supporting a range of able, highly motivated adolescents; willingness to experiment with innovative pedagogies and technology in the classroom; a strong background and knowledge in the desired discipline; a sense of humor, flexibility, energy, and the ability to work effectively within the department; strong organizational skills, high energy, and creativity; commitment to residential life and program, as well as desire to participate in our outdoor, sports, and arts programs.

Math Teacher

The Putney School, a progressive secondary boarding school, has an opening for a math teacher starting in the 2012- 2013 school year.

The position includes:

  • Academic duties including teaching four class sections, working with students in independent, project-based work and senior exhibitions; conferencing regularly with students; writing detailed reports on student performance
  • Duties in athletics, the work program, or another area of expertise
  • Residential duties

The ideal candidate:

  • Has interest and demonstrated ability in teaching and supporting adolescents, sense of humor, flexibility, energy, collegiality, and the ability to work effectively with a team
  • Is able to teach to a wide range of student abilities and levels
  • Has experience teaching material beyond calculus to high school students
  • Is interested in collaborating with colleagues to develop innovative pedagogies
